Sustainability Definitions for Food Products

  • USDA Organic

    Products that are certified organic by the USDA.

  • Sustainable Seafood

    Seafood that is rated Best Choice or Good Alternative by Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch or certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, Aquaculture Stewardship Council, or Best Aquaculture Practices.

  • Sustainable Produce

    Produce that is grown within 400 miles of the distribution center, farms that are certified by the Fair Food Program, and/or produce that meets the Imperfectly Delicious Program.

  • Reduced Antibiotic Poultry

    Chicken and turkey that are produced without the use of antibiotics which belong to classes of compounds approved for use in human medicine and are administered for improved feed efficiency, increased rate of weight gain, or similar growth promotion purposes, or for prophylactic purposes.

  • rBGH Free Dairy

    Dairy products that were produced without the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH).

  • Non-GMO

    Products that are Non-Genetically Modified Organisms as verified by the Non-GMO Project.

  • NAE

    No Antibiotics Ever

  • MSC

    Marine Stewardship Council

  • Monterey Bay Green/Yellow:

    Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch makes recommendations for sustainable seafood choices. Green is “Best Choice,” meaning well managed and caught or farmed responsibly. Yellow is “Good Alternative,” meaning they are ok to buy, but be aware there are concerns with how they are caught, farmed or managed.

  • Humanely Raised Protein

    Animal products that are certified by the Humane Farm Animal Care Association, the Global Animal Partnership, and/or Animal Welfare Association.

  • GAP

    Global Animal Partnership

  • Cage Free Eggs

    Eggs that are certified by the Humane Farm Animal Care Association as cage free, free range, or pasture raised.

Sustainability Definitions for Non-Food Products

  • Sustainable Disposables

    Certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute and Cedar Grove; contain post-consumer and/or recycled content; certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or Forestry Stewardship Council; USDA Biobased Product certified.
